... enables people to resolve disagreements quickly and confidentially without going to courts or tribunals.

... is carried out by trained mediators who don’t take sides. Working in pairs they aim to help both sides find a solution that suits everyone.

... works with neighbour, school, commercial, workplace, family and other conflicts.

... involves visiting parties separately to hear what has happened and explain how mediation works. If everyone is willing, the mediation is then arranged in neutral premises.

... allows everyone to have his or her say about the problem. Parties identify issues to be sorted out and possible solutions, which often lead to ideas that no one had thought of before.

... can result in a written agreement, signed by participants, which is voluntary and not enforceable but is usually kept because it is what everyone wants. Even if no agreement is reached, mediation may be a first step towards ceasing hostilities or coming back to try to find a solution later.
